
What is hydronic balancing and why is it needed?
Most complaints that start with "the boiler is undersized" have nothing to do with the boiler. Water takes the path of least resistance; unless something tells it otherwise, it will not travel to the farthest circuit.
Hydronic balancing is the process of ensuring every circuit in a heating or cooling system receives the flow rate assumed in design. In unbalanced systems, circuits near the pump take too much flow and distant circuits too little — which is why overheated and cold zones coexist in the same building. Balancing is achieved by setting design flow with static balancing valves, maintaining it at part load with dynamic (pressure-independent) valves or differential pressure controllers, and measuring and reporting flow in every circuit.
Is static balancing enough?
Static balancing valves balance the system at full load. In a real building, however, not all circuits run at full load simultaneously; when some close, differential pressure rises in the rest and the balance is lost. That is why variable-flow systems use differential pressure control or pressure-independent valves.
What balancing is worth in energy
In a balanced system the coldest space now receives its design flow, so there is no need to raise flow temperature. Every reduction in flow temperature raises efficiency on condensing boilers and cuts distribution losses. On the pump side, eliminating excess head reduces electricity consumption.
No balancing without measurement
The output of a balancing exercise is measured flow rates, not valve positions. At handover, target flow, measured flow and deviation should be reported for every circuit. That report is also the starting point for any future capacity change.

Can balancing be done in an existing building?
Yes. If circuits have no measurement points, balancing valves may need to be added — usually a short-outage job at the manifold or circuit origin.
Do thermostatic valves provide balance?
No. Thermostatic valves control room temperature; they do not set circuit flow to its design value. Models with presetting contribute partially but do not replace system balancing.
