Siemens Damper Actuators and Air-Side Control

Damper actuator selection defines the torque (Nm) required by damper area and type, rotation angle, running time, control signal and the position taken on power failure (spring return or non-spring return). Safety-critical applications use spring-return actuators.

Torque calculation and fail-safe position

Damper torque is calculated from blade area and damper type using a per-square-metre figure; for low-leakage dampers that figure rises significantly. Insufficient torque means the damper never fully closes, causing continuous outside air leakage.

Frequently asked

Is a spring-return actuator always necessary?

No. It is required where the damper must reach a defined position on power failure (frost protection, exhaust, safety). For comfort-oriented mixing dampers it is usually unnecessary.
