Pump Sets and Hydronic Systems

The hydronic system is the circulatory system of a mechanical installation. A wrongly selected pump does not only consume electricity — it spreads through the building as noise, wear and uneven heating.

A hydronic system is the closed water circuit formed by pumps, pipes, valves and terminal units. The pump duty point is set where its curve meets the system resistance curve; if that point is calculated wrongly the pump is either undersized or wastes energy working against a permanently throttled valve. Haustech selects pumps against the system curve and verifies the duty point on site with balancing valves and differential pressure control.

Pump selection and replacement

The situation we see most often on site is pumps selected far above requirement. Excess head is "managed" by throttling a valve; the result is continuous energy loss and premature wear. Speed-controlled pumps recover most of that loss.

Balancing and differential pressure control

Static balancing valves bring circuits to design flow; differential pressure control valves maintain that balance at part load. Used together, one circuit closing no longer disturbs the others.

My pump is noisy — what could be causing it?

The most common causes are high velocity from excess head, air trapped in the system, insufficient suction pressure (cavitation) and unbalanced flow distribution. Replacing the pump without measuring usually does not solve it.

What does a hydronic balancing exercise deliver?

More even temperature distribution at the same capacity, a lower required flow temperature and consequently lower fuel and pump energy consumption. On completion, measured flow rates are reported for every circuit.
